Feature: Teen Vogue "6 Contemporary Latinx Activists You Should Know"
Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodriguez
"Less than 10 years ago, discussion of our Latinidad on social platforms or any mainstream media was basically nonexistent. There were perhaps a handful of outlets that centered around Latin culture, though they rarely touched on the nuances of the Latin diaspora. Around the mid-2010s, though, Tumblr pages and Facebook groups such as Xicanisma created a new breeding ground for Latinx content, providing us a platform to tell our own stories to the masses, whether they were ready to hear them or not. In 2013, Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodriguez launched the Facebook page Latina Rebels, which featured Latinx culture and political news stories, along with perspectives from women around the world. In 2016, she wrote “Dear Woke Brown Girl” for HuffPost — an empowering piece about resisting the pressures of conforming to a white-male-dominating world. Since then, Mojica Rodriguez has taken her passion for storytelling and published dozens of articles about being a Latina feminist, pursuing graduate studies she found to be racist, and a myriad of other subjects that have landed her national speaking engagements. It is through these public engagements that Mojica Rodriguez’s advocacy work on behalf of the Latinx community truly shines. “I get paid by elite institutions who pay me to tell them what I think,” Mojica Rodriguez tells Teen Vogue. “I am someone who has nothing to lose and will tell you what I really think of you.” Thanks to activists like her, a new generation of Latinxs are no longer as reserved or afraid to share the complexities of their identities. To be part of the Latina Rebels movement, follow them on Instagram and Facebook."
