When I first dreamt up this book, I imagined it having an artistic component. And so I ended up sending one of my favorite artists a DM asking her if she would illustrate the book with images of my own tías, primas, amigas, sisters. I wanted to use visual cues to remind my reader of the very real women who shaped me into who I am and who I long to become.
And she did it! She agreed, and after a long ten days in Brownsville, within the pages of my book, you will find beautiful illustrations made by Josie Del Castillo!!! 🥹💕🥰
Not only that, but she made a colorized version of one of the images which was then made into a sticker. Inspired by one of images found in a chapter of my book where I talk about shame and the terms used to make women carry the burden of shame, like desvergüenza. In that chapter I try to reclaim the word and hold it as a badge of honor. The image is actually based on a picture I have of my abuelita when she was young 💜 you can get a sticker for preordering my book, or if you’ve already preordered my book.
