Culture shock greeted Nicaraguan American author Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodriguez when she moved from Miami to Nashville several years ago.
She came to Music City with a full ride scholarship to Vanderbilt Divinity School, but she did not anticipate how difficult it would be to feel like she belonged when she arrived on campus.
The notions she had about her place and even her ability to write in English came in question. She was able to overcome the challenges, but not without struggle.
Her first book "For Brown Girls With Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts: A Love Letter to Women of Color" was published in September. It is a treatise, an inspirational read and a call to action.
On this episode of the Tennessee Voices podcast, Mojica Rodriguez talked about her history and how she came to write the book.
